Dear Beckett, you're 1 month old...

Dear Beckett,

My dearest son, I simply can't believe you are already one month old. Time is flying by so quickly, and while I'm anxious for you to accomplish all your firsts, I am also trying to hang on tightly to every day of your infancy and enjoy each moment. You are such a cuddly baby; you love to be in one of my slings, snuggled right up against me. In fact, as soon as I put you in one, you rest your head against my chest, sigh, and fall into a deep, contented sleep. It's those moments I am holding onto tightly as you get a little bigger every single day.

Sweet Dreams

The way you arrived in this world wasn't what I had hoped for. I wanted to go into labor on my own and experience all the excitement of wondering "Is this it?", rushing to the hospital, and all that jazz. A c-section wasn't even in the cards as far as I was concerned. But you knew better - whenever I think of the knot in your cord and how you were breech for a reason, I get teary-eyed knowing that we could have lost you. That's more than my heart can bear, and you taught me such a valuable lesson. Trust your children - sometimes they are wiser than their parents.

The first two weeks, you were such a relaxed, easy-going baby. We were so excited; you were going to be the exact opposite of your sister! We'd hit the jackpot with one of those babies you hear people talk about, "Oh, he never fusses. He just eats and sleeps." Well, those two weeks were blissful, and I could even understand why people have more than 2 children. Heck, it's easy, right?

First Bath (5)

Wrong! Right around two weeks, you must have had a chat with Elise, and you did a 180 on us. Suddenly, you became the same fussy, particular child your sister had been. You want to be held, carried, rocked, or held upright at all times. Or carried in a sling. Oh, and you want to nurse about every 2 min. Well, I'm exaggerating, it's more like every 1.5 hours, but it feels like every 2 min. But we survived Elise's infancy, and we'll survive yours as well. However, you know, you can earn your way into the will a lot sooner if you go back to being that relaxed, easy-going baby.

Sleepy Head

Seriously, though, relaxed or fussy, your father and I love you more than we can say. From the moment Elise was born, I knew I wanted one more child. And now that you are here, my heart is complete. I feel like I've always lived my life anticipating the next stage - college, marriage, kids, and so on. For the first time, I feel like I am living for today, appreciating everything I have and the way everything is at this very moment. That's the second big lesson you've taught me in one short month. I love you, Mommy.
